Read Me Like a Book
Publisher: Indigo
Written 15 years before it's first publication in 2015, Kessler's novel about 17-year-old Ash, discovering her sexuality and eventually coming out, was consigned to a drawer until the repeal of Section 28, which banned the 'promotion' of homosexuality. Kessler writes with enormous tenderness and sympathy as Ash juggles her parents' marriage break-up, her school friendships, and boyfriends. We see her growing realisation that her feelings for a dynamic teacher at school are forcing her to change her life, and acknowledge both her love of literature and her own emotional needs.
Adolescence is a tumultuous time for all teenagers, in which supportive novels such as Kessler's, which address many confusing issues around identity and relationships, can provide the reassurance and courage to face complex life choices.
