Using fiction to smash stereotypes 21/03/25
Our World: Pakistan
Publisher: Barefoot Books
In this charming board book, a little girl takes the reader through her daily routine at home with her family in Pakistan.
In the morning, she wakes up and starts the day saying prayers with Ammi, her mother. Then she gets dressed in a shalwar kameez and plays with her baby brother for a while, before enjoying a yummy breakfast of paratha and lassi.
Next, it’s onto the driverless orange train with her grandpa, Dada, and to the fruit stand where Dada and the little girl choose what they want: mango for Dada and falsa for her.
Finally, after such a busy day, it’s time to get ready for bed and say her du’aas – prayers – with Ammi before saying good night.
Featuring a guide to the Urdu words used at the back of the book, this lovely account of a typical day in the life of a little girl in Pakistan is a super introduction to a different culture for some little ones, and a celebration of what is familiar for others.
Nez Riaz’s cheery and bright illustration captures all of the excitement of the small joys of life as a preschooler – a trip on a train, a fruit stall – as well as the reassuring routine of the small pleasures of the everyday.
