Olu’s Teacher
Publisher: Walker Books
It’s Olu’s first day at nursery school and he’s a bit nervous. What will the teacher be like? What do teachers even look like?
Luckily, he’s greeted by Jay, who looks familiar to Olu. Jay has a big smile and can play the guitar. After a busy day of drawing, playing, singing, and listening to story time, Olu spots Dad waiting to collect him. And Olu realises that there are many different teachers at nursery, but lucky him, he has Jay, who looks like him!
This would be a lovely book to share with a child who might be worried about going to nursery for the first time. It not only shows that nursery teachers are welcoming and organise fun activities for the children, but that some can be men – and some might come from your own community. The gorgeous, soft illustrations add to the gentle, positive tone.
The author himself worked in Early Years settings for over 20 years and he knows that through confidence-building, children can adapt readily to new experiences. He has also written some top tips for preparing a child for nursery, which are on the final pages.

Books about people who help us, for age 0-5
Discovering people in our community who help us (and their exciting vehicles!) is a key part of children's early years. As their worlds broaden to people and things outside the home, so they learn how some people have jobs that keep us safe and well. These are some of our favourite books to engage and excite young children on this topic.
