What to Read After... David Walliams 17/02/25
Miss Cat
Publisher: Thames & Hudson
Welcome to the shady, intrigue-filled world of Miss Cat, a slinky detective-for-hire who’s partial to a thrilling mystery and a cool glass of milk.
When a wealthy widower’s prized canary is kidnapped, Miss Cat is hired to unravel the intricate trail of clues to discover the truth. Along the way, our sardonic and brilliantly quirky hero meets a cast of curious characters, including a pipe-smoking, talking dog and a woman who seems suspiciously ssserpentine...
Using ingenuity, logic and persistence, Miss Cat eventually cracks the case and triggers an unexpected resolution.
This is a brilliantly fun and irreverent graphic novel by Fromental and Jolivet, translated from its original French by Jill Phythian. Miss Cat is a no-nonsense, deadpan protagonist who will appeal to many readers – especially fans of strong, independent female characters like Wednesday Adams. The story features a well-balanced mix of bizarre situations, snappy dialogue and action, with a genuinely intriguing mystery at its core.
Jolivet’s illustrations employ a cool, muted colour palette and are spaced well on the page to create a pleasantly intricate visual experience which does not overwhelm. The world of Miss Cat has been wonderfully rendered to sit on the verge of the real and the bizarre, perhaps best represented by the octopus bartender Olaf!
A brilliant, short and snappy graphic novel – the first in a trilogy – this is sure to be a hit for fans of mystery, adventure and dry humour.
