Jack and the Beanstalk

Another lift-the-flap fairy tale from the Stephen Tucker/Nick Sharratt duo, who pair together so brilliantly. This time we re-visit Jack and the Beanstalk: the tale of a boy who swaps his cow for some magic beans that sprout an enormous beanstalk, far up into the sky, which leads to a castle and a rather ill-tempered giant...

Stephen Tucker does well to capture the main thrust of this fairy tale, which is a little more complicated perhaps than something like Cinderella. As before, the text unfolds in rhyming verse and no-nonsense language that cuts to the heart of the matter. The story reads as funny and light-hearted and easy to absorb, even for smaller ones. 

Nick Sharratt's illustrations are as vivid and vibrant and ever and add to the fun appeal of the book. The design of the pages is extra impressive – children will love lifting the flaps throughout but their eyes will ogle at the pop-out elements, especially the giant's large arm that flaps around, trying to grab Jack as he runs away. Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!
