Ask Oscar
Publisher: Farshore
An ordinary day is interrupted for Sam when he finds a dog called Oscar on his doorstep. He smuggles Oscar, who turns out to hold an incredible secret, into his bedroom, but of course he can’t keep a dog a secret from his parents for long. Sam simply must persuade his parents to let Oscar stay. He even convinces his best friend to wear a pig mask and steal his mum’s supermarket shopping so that Oscar can play the hero.
Of course, Sam’s plans never quite work out, especially with a dog-hating neighbour scuppering plans, too. Sam’s last-ditch attempt to turn things around involve his dad’s invention, the Poopomatic: will it work out?
Alan MacDonald, who has also written the Dirty Bertie series, has created a perfect read with Ask Oscar. This is simply an all-round good book, with lovable characters, laugh-out-loud moments and lots of warmth and innocence. It is the perfect story for a child to curl up with on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Sam is a charming boy who is also a great role model, full of determination and ingenuity – even if he does keep landing himself in trouble!
