Allies and Assassins

Review

When Prince Anders is assassinated, his younger brother Jared's life is dramatically turned upside down. Thrust suddenly onto the throne of Archenfield at the age of just sixteen, he must negotiate his way through the complex politics of the Council of Twelve.  But as he deals with potential allies and enemies, and tries to win over his new subjects, Jared finds himself increasingly determined to uncover the truth about his brother's death. Was it really the work of a political assassin - or could one of the Council of Twelve themselves be guilty?

Joining forces with young physician's apprentice Asta, Jared soon finds himself uncovering some carefully-concealed secrets about those around him. But as the body count begins to rise can the pair discover the identity of Anders's assassin - before they themselves becomes the next victims?

From the author of Vampirates comes this clever blend of Game of Thrones-style fantasy with a classic murder mystery plot, the first in a new series. Asta and Jared make likeable heroes, and although the story is a little slow to get going at first, its plentiful twists and turns will soon engage young readers, keeping them guessing about who the real villain could be.
