Wanna see A Llama?
by Simon Philip, illustrated by Ian Smith
Interest age: 4 to 5

About this book
Two children are out and about in a city, looking for llamas. The little girl professes to be a llama expert, but every time she points one out to the little boy, it turns out to be a different animal: a camel, a pangolin, and even a giraffe! Every time the little boy reminds her of one of the characteristics of a llama – four legs, a tail, a furry coat – the self-professed llama expert finds a new animal… that isn’t quite right. Meanwhile, a llama parade is happening in the background: will the children notice the llamas that are right under their noses?
This fun, bright and informative picture book straddles the balance between fiction and nonfiction – on one hand, telling the fun story of two children trying to find a llama in a city, and, on the other, giving us some facts about what llamas are, and what they’re not. At the end of the book, there’s also a lovely factual double page containing a brief description and picture of the comparison animals in the book: a snake-necked turtle, giraffe, hyena, camel, alpaca and pangolin.
This is a lovely, fun book which will teach young readers a little something about llamas and some other animals, which also encourages lots of interaction as children spot the llamas in the background of the illustrations.
