About this book

The town of Starspill has been shrouded in a cloak of damp, grey fog for 140 years, ever since the Wolf swallowed the sun and plunged the world into darkness. Zac works as an apprentice starsmith, polishing fallen stars to be used in lamps, in an attempt to vanquish the perpetual gloom cast by the fog.

Zac is dismayed when he discovers that the town’s cats have stolen his most treasured possession, a scrap of ancient map, which he’d hidden under a floorboard. They will only give it back if he agrees to steal the Ember of the Sun from the museum.

The Ember, said to be a shard from the sun, is one of only three in existence. According to legend, if all three pieces are reunited, the sun will return. Reluctantly, Zac agrees and, along with his best friend Alys, an enigmatic bookseller and a little black kitten, he embarks on an epic quest which is fraught with danger.

This compelling fantasy adventure features a cast of mysterious characters and a gripping plot. The dystopian world is vividly described and readers are thrust into a magical realm of shadows, fear and mistrust.
