About this book

Ronald the bug is very snug in his cosy home, until he makes the mistake of answering the door to Snake, who tries to eat him. Sadly, it’s the beginning of a predator-filled day for poor Ronald, with not only Snake, but Mole, Frog, Bird and Crocodile also having a go at making him lunch.

Finally, Ronald snaps. He’s determined to get back home to be snug again, just like the mighty little bug he is. But, just when he’s safe and sound back home, who’s that knocking at the door?

Newson and Willmore’s charming and funny picture book gives readers a bit of nature information by showing them the various animals that eat insects, but it’s Ronald the bug’s hilarious antics – and his steely resolve not to be picked on by the other animals – that is the main appeal here. The repetition of the “snug as a bug in a rug” phrase throughout is a nice one for kids to call out, and the rhyming text also makes the reading experience fun and jolly. It’s a great read with plenty of humour, meaning adults will enjoy it too.
