When Rosita (known as Sloe) was little, her Papa disappeared and she and Mama went to live in a prison camp, where Mama's knowledge and teaching of science were forbidden and there were no wild animals. When Sloe is sent to prison school, Mama disappears, but leaves Sloe with six tiny, magical animals called Lindquists, which hold the secret to life itself. Together with the Lindquists, 13-year-old Sloe sets off on an epic 1,000 mile journey, where she learns to survive against the odds, and is eventually reunited with her mother. This mesmerising and futuristic tale of science, magic and adventure, has been shortlisted for the 2005 Booktrust Teenage Prize.
