Michael Rosen's poem 'I opened a book' was written especially for Children's Book Week 2008.

We invited schoolchildren to write their own new verses for the poem. Here are some of the best ones sent in.

I saw the girl, sitting alone,
Oh how I wish, I could go home.
She looks so sad, so full of fright,
And now it's turning into night.

As I panted through the dark,
In the tree I saw a spark.
It fell from the tree tops to the floor.
It showed me the way to the big old door.

I tried to read the letter, but before I could,
I heard a mighty roar deep inside the wood.
The letter said " Dear Michael, you have twenty days to get out,
Or you'll be stuck in this book forever no doubt.

I saw some blood
Come from a body.
I felt scared, my heart was pounding.
I heard a scream,
I thought it was a dream.
I woke up and it was real.
I tried to run but my feet were stuck to the ground.

I saw some wolves along with bears.
I felt scared, turned around and there was nothing there.
I heard a twig snap,
I turned around, I tried to scream but nothing came out.
I heard the wolves come closer and closer,
As I nearly fainted, I was getting whiter and whiter.

All I could do was run,
Really this wasn't any fun.
I fell down a black hole,
I heard her voice the little soul.
The little girl got nearer,
I was really full with fear.
She pulled me out of the dark place,
It was like being in a suitcase.
With a click of fume,
I was back in my bedroom.

I Opened a Book ...

Then suddenly the land shook and shook,
And then the girl closed the book,
All went black - and I was trapped inside
Where all the monsters hide!
"Help," I called. "Help," I cried. "I'm Still Inside!"

By Georgia Eason and Sarah Hammond, Sheldwich Primary School, Faversham

I saw the wood was a spooky place
Some rats and mice jumped up into my face
And some ants climbed into my pants
There was no sun in the day time
And no moon in the night
It gave me a serious fright
There were creepy spiders and slithery snakes.
