Bedtime Reading Week event suggestions

You could get everyone to come along in their pyjamas, bring their teddies or snuggly blankets  To set the scene, you could create a bed to sit on, complete with duvet and pillows or perhaps create a night-time backdrop by covering a black sheet with a moon and shiny stars.

A bedtime reading event can be held at any time of the day. Children will love coming out in their pyjamas in the middle of the day - why not get them to bring their teddies or snuggly blankets and share in a cosy session of stories and rhymes.

To set the scene, you could create a bed to sit on, complete with duvet and pillows or perhaps create a night-time backdrop by covering a black sheet with a moon and shiny stars.

Why not try the following rhymes?

'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' - a definite favourite!

'Sleeping bunnies' (even more exciting if you have a parachute)

'Wee Willie Winkie'

'Round and round the garden like a teddy bear'

'Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch your toes'

'Miss Polly had a dolly'

'This is the way we get ready for bed' (sung to the tune of 'Here we go round the mulberry bush')

It is called 'Night Night ,Sleep Tight' and is aimed at encouraging a good bedtime routine. The programme is broadcast every week night from 6.30–7.00pm and is packed full of songs, rhymes, music and of course a bedtime story, not to mention great publicity for Bookstart events across the Borough

Healthy bedtime routines

Why not consult with health professionals about bedtime routines and the message they give to parents? You could provide a handout for parents. Also you could consult with the oral health team and maybe provide toothbrushes and information about cleaning teeth before bed.
