Booktrust help Daybreak to 'Get Britain Reading'
ITV breakfast news programme Daybreak have this week launched a nationwide campaign to ‘Get Britain Reading’ and Booktrust are on board as charity partners. Throughout this week Daybreak has been talking about the importance of reading regularly for pleasure and asking the nation to pledge to read for 10 minutes a day.
Backed by celebrities such as Tess Daly, Jonathan Ross, Dermot O’Leary, Emma Bunton and a host of other celebrities and high-profile people, including Booktrust’s patron HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and the Prime Minister David Cameron, the campaign has also been asking Daybreak viewers to donate good quality children’s books to book bins in selected Morrison’s and Waterstones stores.
Our Booktrust Children’s Centre partners, who work to encourage shared family reading and communication through Bookstart Corner, will be the lucky recipients of the books donated to over 85 Morrison’s stores in England. These books will help to reinforce the excellent activities that take place in Children’s Centres to encourage confidence around book sharing and support regular family reading time in the home.
One of our Salford Children’s Centre partners has already taken part in a special Daybreak film highlighting what goes on in Children’s Centres to promote reading, for which they were treated to a visit from a celebrity actress (tune in to Daybreak tomorrow morning to find out who...)
Director of Bookgifting at Booktrust Rosemary Clarke will also be making an early visit to the Daybreak studios tomorrow morning to talk about why it is so important to start encouraging the reading habit with children at a young age and how Booktrust continues to champion a love of reading for all.
Dyslexia Action and the Salvation Army are also involved in the campaign, linking up their projects with 50 Waterstones stores and Morrison’s stores in Scotland and Wales. Communities and schools across the country will be benefiting from a visit from the Get Britain Reading book bus, with Daybreak building one lucky school a complete library.
Through Get Britain Reading Daybreak aims to help families caught in a trap through generations not having gained the vital reading skills they need to get ahead in life, something that Booktrust also works hard to achieve.
