Autumn Poems 2012

October - November 2012
The poems are selected from the new anthology, Poems on the Underground: A New Edition (Particular Books/Penguin 2012), displayed on Tube trains for eight weeks.

All the poems are on themes central to the anthology:

  • Love Two - 'Fragments' by Sappho, translated by Cicely Herbert - The ancient Greek poet speaking directly to women today
  • Seasons - 'A song for England' by Andrew Salkey - A heartfelt and humorous tribute by a Caribbean poet to his adoptive land
  • War - 'A Dead Statesman' by Rudyard Kipling, from ‘Epitaphs of the War 1914-1918’ - A searing poem by a poet who lost his son to the War, chosen to commemorate Armistice Day
  • Exile and loss - 'The Emigrant Irish' by Eavan Boland - a clear-eyed poem about the Irish famine by one of Ireland’s foremost poets
  • Music - 'Concerto for Double Bass' by John Fuller - a delightful solo work for one of the essential but neglected instruments in every orchestra
  • The natural world - 'Swallows' by Owen Sheers - a beautifully observed image of a familiar autumnal sight, by an award-winning Welsh writer of poems, plays, TV and radio scripts.

Poems on the Underground is supported by TfL, Arts Council England and the British Council. Poems are selected by writer Judith Chernaik and poets Cicely Herbert and Gerard Benson.
