Using children's books to explore disability

This section includes examples of children's books that offer positive images and storylines, and ways of using them in the classroom

 

The consultation with disabled children and their families (summarised in Views and Experience) suggested that children's books can play an important role in presenting positive images and messages for both disabled and non-disabled children.

 

This section goes on to suggest specific children's books which may be useful within (or beyond) the classroom as a starting point for discussing difference and disability.

 

A wealth of children's book material is available to support classroom discussions around difference and disability. This resource presents just a few ideas, including books which may help develop awareness and understanding of specific impairments, books which can help promote positive attitudes to disability and books which are more generally about acceptance and respecting difference
