What's the Story

What's the Story? is part of Booktrust's work around disability and children's books.
This online resource complements our Bookmark site about all aspects of disability and books, and our Quentin Blake Award project, which consulted children on the subject of disability in books.
The specific aim of What's the Story? is to support the development of positive attitudes towards disability, both in the classroom and in the wider community.
This will be an evolving resource, and we aim to continue to add new material over time.
The resource includes:
- Views and experiences: a selection of feedback from young disabled people and their families about their own experiences, their ideas for improving attitudes towards disability and difference, and their views on the role of children's books.
- Using children's books to explore disability: resources for teachers including examples of children's books which offer positive images and storylines, and ways of using them in the classroom.
- Advice for writers, illustrators and publishers: advice on how to include more positive material in children's books, and making books as genuinely inclusive as possible.
