Blue Peter Book Awards 2012 Schools

Blue Peter Book Awards 2012 Schools

During December and January, more than 300 school pupils aged between 8 and 12 from across the UK were busy reading the four shortlisted books for this year's Blue Peter Book Awards. After much discussion and debate in their classes, they each voted for their favourite title. Gareth P Jones' The Considine Curse was the worthy winner, scooping the Blue Peter Book of the Year 2012.

Alongside reading the books, the pupils were busy being photographed and filmed, designing posters and book jackets, as well as writing reviews. Below you'll find a selection of the best that were submitted to Booktrust. What a talented bunch!

The reviews

A Year Without Autumn

A Year Without Autumn was my favourite book out of the shortlisted ones sent to George Heriots, as it had a twist to the story. When I first looked at its front cover, I thought that the book was going to be all about a year without the season Autumn, but I was wrong. The author tricks us cleverly into thinking that at some point in the book a season is going to go missing.  I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a gripping story that you just can't put down. I thought this book was one of the best books I've ever read! Poppy, George Heriot's Junior School

It didn't look too good when looking at the cover (so the saying is right, don't judge a book by its cover) but once I got started, I began to think otherwise. ... Brilliant book, great storyline, definitely five stars. Matthew, Wendover CE Junior School

The Considine Curse

The novel The Considine Curse tells the story of super-natural creatures which are interesting to read about. I like how there was no limit to how gruesome the story can get and the description the author used to literally form a scene from the book right in front of me. Although the idea of creature creeping down the streets of London at night sends shivers down my spine, I adore it. Kirshna, Sudbury Primary School

It's a sort of mystery and fantasy book. It's all about a young Australian girl who has some odd family. After her secret grandmother dies, she flies to England and meets her relatives. At first I thought it was going to be a girly Twilight type of book and then as I read more, I began to get into the book and now I love it. This book is surprising and interesting and that's why I think it should win the Blue Peter Book Award 2012! Sophie, Wendover CE Junior School

Discover the Extreme World

This book is amazing, you should read it. It's like the future flashes before your eyes and then it makes you want to read it again and again. My favourite part is when it tells you all about the animals and volcanoes and earthquakes. My rating: 10. Pupil, St. Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School

Discover the Extreme World is a book full of interesting and weird facts that can give you the full adrenaline effect. It goes from record breaking cars to super-active volcanoes. This book can show you things you never knew before. The page 'White-knuckle Rides' in the chapter 'Ultimate Machines' have the most stomach-turning, gut-wrenching rides in the WORLD! The fastest rollercoaster in the world is called Dodonpa in Japan. It travels 108.8 mph. Sulaimaan, Sudbury Primary School

The Official Countdown to the London 2012 Games

Read this non-fiction book - you will learn loads of facts on this year's biggest sporting event on the Planet! Get essential information on the Olympic and Paralympic games. There are loads of fact files on famous sports people. My favourite part is when they introduced the two mascots Mandeville and Wenlock - they both have one big eye on their head. Pupil, St. Nicholas Church in Wales Primary School

The book gives interesting facts about the past Olympic Games and there is a quiz to test if you are a world champion or a total novice on the past and present Olympics. You get to read the data files of British stars like Beth Tweddle and Sir Chris Hoy who are very interesting. It gives you the basic rules and jargon busters. This book is really good for kids who want to enjoy sport and learn about their chosen and other sports. I think this book should be the Blue Peter winner because it is really educational and I liked it. Andrew, Wendover CE Junior School
