The Age of Miracles

by Karen Thompson Walker

There are many aspects about the earth that cause people to worry,  which have the potential to escalate to a catastrophic  level and to negatively affect the lives of every person. However, there is one thing that is taken for granted, a constant which will never change. Each day is the same in one way - time. Night and day, dark and light, the rise and set of the sun, all within twenty four hours. What if this began to change?

In The Age of Miracles, this is exactly what happens. One day, scientists realise that the earth's rotation has begun to slow, and have no explanation as to why. Through the course of the novel, the repercussions of this slowing begin to reveal themselves - gravity shifts, animals react and even humans are affected.

We view this change from Julia's perspective, an only child living with her parents in the suburbs of California. For such a young person, her insights into the slowing and how it affects those around her are profound, drawing you into considering how you would react to such a change in your own life.

The prose is beautifully written, with language that makes you feel that are with Julia, and seeing with your own eyes the shifting relationships with her family and friends, and the physical changes in the environment around her.
