Soul Fire
by Kate Harrison
The second in Kate Harrison's Soul Beach trilogy, Soul Fire continues the story of Alice Forster, whose life changed forever when her elder sister Meggie was murdered.
Alice can still communicate with Meggie through the virtual world of Soul Beach - an online tropical paradise, where she meets and interacts with a whole community of young, beautiful and dead teenagers, including the handsome Danny. Yet even paradise can be stifling if it goes on forever, and the inhabitants of Soul Beach want Alice's help to move on.
As Alice sets out to unravel the mystery of their deaths - including what really happened to Meggie - things become increasingly complicated. Alice's parents are worried by the increasing amount of time she's spending online, her friends don't understand, and she's no longer sure who she can trust. Meanwhile, as Alice edges closer to discovering the identity of Meggie's killer, the killer is also getting closer and closer to Alice.
This compelling thriller is a very readable page-turner, with plenty of twists and turns that will keep readers guessing. But as well as lots of excitement, the novel also offers up some interesting and thought-provoking questions about online identity and the role of social media in young people's lives today.
