The Glimpse
by Claire Merle
Welcome to the future, where the population is segregated into Pures or Crazies (genetic carries of mental instability). The Pures live in small communities cut off from the rest of society, whilst the Crazies live outside the walls in the squalour and mayhem of the city.
15-year-old Pure Ana Barber – whose father developed the Pure test - has been promised to Jasper Taurell, whose father owns influential drug company, Novastra. But then Jasper is abducted, and Ana sets out to save him.
Ana's search leads her into the forbidden world of the Crazies, where she soon finds herself questioning everything she has formerly believed. Hearing rumours everywhere she begins to wonder whether the government and Novastra have invented Pures simply to engineer a subservient population. And who is charismatic, dissident, Cole, with his visionary hopes for the future?
Combining thriller, romance, and a scarily believable glimpse of the near-future, this is compelling stuff. But although it has a dystopian setting, this is also a story of self-discovery and growing up, as Ana gradually realises that she is the controller of her emotions and thoughts.
