Skulduggery Pleasant: Death Bringer
by Derek Landy
Derek Landy’s series about a skeleton detective and Valkyrie, his assistant, reaches its sixth instalment in a violent struggle between the forces of evil and even more evil, laced with lashings of dark humour.
A junior reporter finds a homeless man murdered. From this point on, we move from one set of vicious villains to another - Necromancers, Faceless Ones, Rippers and vampires shape-shift, dissolve, appear and disappear, all intent on killing each other and gaining the upper hand.
There’s plenty of blood and torture, but it’s ultimately tongue-in-cheek, with one of the most memorable scenes being the incredibly inept escape by ice-cream van of the Zombie King.
