Please God, Find Me A Husband
by Simone Lia
Simone Lia's follow-up to Fluffy is another humourous take on the sense of identity that comes with a quest for a place to belong. Taking on the idea of Lia's quest for a husband leading her on a voyage of religion and an exploration of her Catholicism.
The beginning of the book finds Lia in Leicester Square having just been dumped. Worrying about her age and lack of ring on her finger, she asks God to help her. What follows is a series of international adventures from Australia to heaven as Lia meets nuns, men and fellow travellers on the journey. She even meets God himself in this mixture of memoir and allegory.
While the book lacks the much-loved Fluffy's subtlety and often relies on a creeping heavy-handed approach to religion, it is still fun and occasionally poignant, managing to capture Simone Lia's impeccable ability to self-deprecate and be warm.
