Nothing Like a Puffin

Bright blocks of colour are used to good effect in this lively picture book. Sue Soltis gradually reveals a series of other objects or creatures which might look like a puffin, or which can do certain things a puffin does. She points out that ladders and houses bear no resemblance to a puffin, but shows that newspapers are black and white, jeans have two legs, goldfish swim, a spade digs, snakes lay eggs, helicopters fly and penguins are birds -  just like puffins.

These thought-provoking comparisons help to encourage lateral thinking, but by the end of the story, young readers will have to admit that when all this is put together, there is simply nothing quite like a puffin.
