Where is Fred?
by
Edward Hardy
Illustrated by Ali Pye
This picture book stars Fred, a happy, fluffy little white caterpillar who spends his time trying to avoid Gerald the Crow who is intent on making a meal of him.
Ali Pye's pastel-coloured illustrations show all the ways that Fred can camouflage himself amongst everything from cotton wool balls to hair bands, eyebrows and moustaches. Fred's last journey provides a scarf for Gerald, until the caterpillar finally transforms into a butterfly.
A whimsical look at the butterfly life cycle, Where is Fred? should not be taken as strictly accurate, missing out as it does, the chrysalis stage. However, this is a fun, engaging and humorous text, well supported by Pye's lively illustrations.
