Little Lion
by Lesley Beake
A wonderful story based on a traditional tale from the African Bushmen. One day Dad brings home a lion, insisting it’s a dog. Everyone else in the family can see it isn’t a dog, and the children (twin brothers) are fearful that others will get to see it, and especially afraid that Big Jonno, the school bully, will find out. When he does, the twins make sure he regrets his unkindness to others!
Pal’s illustrations not only add vibrant colour, humour and context to the story, but also show us why Dad is distracted and over-imaginative, and explain many unwritten aspects of the tale. A short note explains the story’s origin, which may tempt readers to explore these traditional tales.
