Gretchen’s twin sister was snatched by a witch in the woods when they were children. Since then she, and her older brother Ansel, have had to live with survivor guilt and terrible grief.

On their way to start a new life near the ocean, the siblings find themselves in a wooded backwater and befriend Sophia, the local chocolatier, who appears to be loved and hated in equal measure by the locals. As Ansel is preoccupied with his attraction to Sophia, Gretchen discovers to her horror that the witches she has feared all her life are very real and very, very dangerous.
