Blood Runner
by James Riordan
In apartheid South Africa, Samuel’s parents and sister, innocent bystanders during an uprising, are shot by police. While his brothers join the anti apartheid movement, vowing to avenge the deaths of their family, Samuel decides to fight oppression and prejudice in his own way. Samuel is a good runner and, with the help of his uncle, he focuses on training for his long race to freedom.
Years later, in the presence of President Nelson Mandela, he triumphs, winning the gold medal at the Olympics, proving there is another way to fight for freedom.
This is a moving and powerful story about the struggle to escape racism and oppression in Apartheid South Africa where everyday life for black people is vividly portrayed. The reader is soon drawn into Samuel’s story in this gripping and thought provoking tale. An enlightening and uplifting must read.
