My Two Grandads

by

Floella Benjamin

Illustrated by Margaret Chamerlain

Aston’s granddads are different from each other, but both love playing musical instruments. Grandad Roy is from Trinidad and plays steel drum in his steel band, while Grandad Harry is from Lancashire and plays trumpet in his brass band. They each teach Aston how to play their kind of music and he loves it all. It’s when the official band pulls out of the school summer fair, and Aston comes up with a solution, that a whole new type of harmony can be heard.

The illustrations convey the joy of playing and responding to music (on some pages you feel you can almost hear it), and the story ends with a vibrant celebration of the success of cultures coming together.
