Food and Faith

by

Susan Reuben

Illustrated by Sophie Pelham

Six children, aged 10-11, and each from a different religious and cultural background, explain how food is central to their religious practice. Each child tells their story through words and photographs. They explain rules and rituals about food in their everyday life and at times of celebration. They cover fasting and feasting at Ramadan, food traditions in a Buddhist monastery and Sikh Gurdwara, the meaning of Holy Communion, the Seder plate at Passover and Hindu sanctified offerings.

The book explores Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism along with vegetarian recipes from five of the religions: pancakes, honey cake, pakoras, coconut barfi and puris, along with a useful glossary. An excellent resource for religious education.
