The Night Circus

by Erin Morgenstern

A magical whimsical intense rollercoaster journey through a turn of the century circus filled with mystery, intrigue and true love.

Two magicians enter into a competition. They will pit their children against each other when they are adults. The children are sent away to train. In the meantime, a Night Circus is created, seemingly the battleground for their challenge. However, what cannot be accounted for is how intertwined in the circus these two challengers are.

The Night Circus, the debut novel from Erin Morgenstern, has the markings of a highly popular classic book. The set up is brilliant, that magic exists yet is presented as trickery to keep the sacred knowledge that magic exists, secret. The mixture of challenge and love and how this devours the two challengers from the get-go creates a masterful amount of tension and suspension of disbelief as the night circus becomes more and more prominent throughout the world, creating its own cult of fans.

It's a great book, definitely in the vein of Jonathan Strange and M Norrel and the film, The Prestige. Worth checking out for its flights of fancy and deliberate fast-paced delivery.
