Adelaide the Flying Kangaroo
by Tomi Ungerer
This charming picturebook comes from the pen of an award-winning French author and tells the story of Adelaide, a kangaroo who is born with wings. Adelaide longs for adventure, so hitches a ride in an aeroplane to Paris. At first she is overwhelmed and frightened by the big city and longs to meet another Kangaroo like her, but soon finds success as a music hall performer. When Adelaide spots a burning building, she is able to use her wings to save the day and learns that her unusual gift can be a very good thing.
This tender and sometimes poignant book is delicately illustrated using a muted colour palette; with some exquisite depictions of Paris. This story is ideal for sharing one-to-one and raises questions about loneliness, friendship and being different.
