Supergods

Our World in the Age of the Superhero

by Grant Morrison

Grant Morrison is in the unique position of being able to do anything he wants. He is intergalactic chief of the nerds. His writing for comic books is so legendary that only Frank Miller and Stan Lee surpass him in name and oeuvre. He is almost single-handedly responsible for making our superheroes more up-to-date, more believable, more tortured and the adventures they face more complex, more allegorical and more layered than any of his peers. His work on Superman, Batman and the X-Men has presented well-known characters as darker, edgier, more complex and more exciting than ever before.

And now he’s written a non-fiction book about why we love superheroes. And how close they are to our belief in religion and spirit. This is partly a potted history of superheroes, from the inception of Superman and everything he represented to the present day and partly a memoir of Morrison’s own work, from creating the gamechanging Arkham Asylum arc of Batman to his other works. Written in his frenetic, acerbic, complex style and filled with pages of information and praise for superheroes, this is the nerds’ bible and the essential riposte for anyone who says comics are for nerds.
