Tom's Midnight Garden

by Philippa Pearce

Tom is sent away to his boring aunt and uncles flat for the summer holidays. With no garden or children to play with he feels lonely and unhappy, until one night he hears the clock striking thirteen and discovers a secret garden where he makes a new friend, Hatty, and discovers he is able to go back in time. Each time he visits the garden a few years have passed, and as Hatty gets older Tom remains the same age.

This beautifully written book is a poignant examination of relationships and growing up.
