John returns from the First World War with a fever and haunted by nightmares of battle and the exploits of his commanding officer. Captain Harker seemed to have superhuman strength and appeared to drain his enemies of blood.

John recovers and falls in love with his nurse, Mary, believing his nightmares over. However, Harker returns to England, bewitches John's sister Lily and elopes with her for their wedding at Castle Dracula in Romania.

Realising Harker's true nature - he is a vampire - John and Mary set off to save Lily from a dreadful fate.
