The Christmas Eve Ghost

In her latest picturebook, Hughes revisits the 1930s Liverpool of her own childhood, to tell the story of young Bronwen and Dylan, who find kindness from an unexpected source when they are frightened by what they think is a ghost on Christmas Eve.

Although the world of washhouses and tin baths by the fire depicted in Hughes’ story will be unfamiliar to most of today’s children, the themes of kindness and the Christmas spirit will not.

This is a wonderfully cosy book, perfect for sharing as Christmas approaches. Grandparents may especially enjoy explaining some of the period detail to the children in their family.
