Nerd Do Well
by Simon Pegg
It may be the time of year for celebrity autobiographies to be doing the rounds in preparation for easy Christmas gift choices. Luckily, though, one of them is a memoir by Simon Pegg. Michael Mcintyre et al (not Russell Brand- his writing is hilarious) all have egos to stroke and this usually informs the tone of their memoirs. Simon Pegg, however, has built a career on being a loveable nerd, soaked with humility, charm, wit and, for geeky men of my age, he holds the unique position of being 'one of us done good…' hence the title.
We know he can write too… we've all loved Spaced, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Can he write a celebrity memoir?
Yes. Of course he can. Short answer. End of review.
But no… read about how he went from 12-year-old performing stand-up for his mates to the engineering deck of the Starship Enterprise, via some of the UK's most seminal comedy series. Read about his hilarious and charmingly close relationship with the equally brilliant Nick Frost. Read about how he came to write Spaced. I don't mean to frame this like an advert but, simply, the book is a breezy, funny read, filled with anecdotes and humility. And that's the type of 'celebrity' I want to read about.
