A Different Sky

by Meira Chand

Following the intricately woven lives of three families, A Different Sky plunges us into the turmoil of pre-independence Singapore. Grounded in historical events and settings ranging from Communist hide-outs in the jungle, the stifling mansion of a Chinese dynasty, rioting school children and the bustling streets of Serangoon Lane, Chand provides a panoramic view of a revolutionary interlude in history, whilst simultaneously allowing us to become embroiled in the personal stories at the heart of the action.

In its own words, this is a book of 'shifting landscapes, regroupings and realignments'; the protagonists constantly buffeted by the whim of fate, desperately trying to carve their path in life. Yet however fractured their lives may become, there is the symbiotic pull of their homeland that binds them all.

At once heart-breaking and life-affirming, united in their yearning for 'a different sky', we are confronted with the harsh reality of just how much can change and the kaleidoscope of circumstances that can come to be under the same sky.

Challenging and poignant, never shying away from the brutal reality but remaining unflinchingly sensitive, A Different Sky hits hard and resonates deeply - the images it portrays won't depart easily.
