Jack Frost

by Kazuno Kohara

A little boy sits by the fire, miserable because it is winter and all his friends are hibernating.

But when he looks out of his window and sees the first flakes of snow falling, he is enticed outside and the muted brown of the previous pages is transformed into a brilliant blue, as the boy explores a winter wonderland.

The boy meets a playful Jack Frost who prances and frolics around the snowy landscape, chasing him, throwing snowballs and helping him build snowmen. Then one day the first snowdrop peeps through the snow and Jack has to disappear again, until next year…

The beautiful lino-cut illustrations and a limited but striking colour palette make this a very special winter’s tale. Despite the simplicity of the illustrations, great emotion ranging from sadness to exhilaration is wonderfully conveyed in this memorable picture book.
