Harry and Hopper
by
Margaret Wild
Illustrator: Freya Blackwood
Harry and Hopper do most things together, so when Harry comes home from school one day to find his pet gone, he is bereft. At first, without Hopper by his side, Harry can’t get to sleep at night but slowly he finds the strength to let go and say goodbye.
Blackwood’s award-winning illustrations are done using charcoal, which as well as conveying Hopper’s initial exuberance and bounciness, also infuses the book with a somewhat sombre tone, lifted by hopeful splashes of colour on every page.
A moving book, which is ideal for sharing with a child coping with loss for the first time.
