Bunker 13
by Aniruddha Bahal
Bunker 13 is a visceral explosion of sex, drugs and war- unlike anything any Indian author has ever written, unlike any book that has ever been written. It precariously balances a weary political understanding of the complexities and contradictions of historically warring countries with the wild abandon and narcotic sensory overload of possessed books like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Our hero, MM, is a soldier in the parachute regiment, a quadruple-crosser of the Azerbaijanis, the Sikhs, the Indian Secret Service and the Indian Army when it comes to drugs and weapons, and a womaniser. Written in a relentless second person that lurches around you like a 3-D immersive experience, it gives you a journey into the exorcism of the demons of war and vice from a man's soul.
The dark comic thriller is set against the background of the conflict in Kashmir between India and Pakistan before exploring the rivalry (military and criminal) between two elite Indian regiments, both sides of the rivalry being things MM is fascinated by.
What at first seems like petty theft by a few officers soon escalates into a vast and ornate criminal and political conspiracy, with more sex, gadgets, weaponry, double-crosses and hairsbreadth escapes than your average Bond film, and is told at breakneck speed with dazzling wit.
