An Attempted Book by Tim Key
by Tim Key
This book is brilliant but where would you find it in a bookshop? Probably humour but that does it a huge disservice. There are elements of drama, poetry, fiction, non-fiction and photography in this absurd and funny book. Tim Key is an award-winning stand up poet whose poems border on the deranged and wilfully macabre. He has appeared on Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, his own sketch show Cowards and won best show at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The book comprises lists instructions suggestions and well... everything in the title from a hilarious generic Hollywood trailer to possible designs for a shawl. My favourite pages involve a description of a face that descends into surreal comparisons and a list of things a fiddler might think. There is no plot, there is no structure- it's a collection of lists, photographs, essays, short stories, poems and scripts that have no connections other than they map out the manic mind of Tim Key. It's incredibly silly and laugh-out-loud funny. Reading it on the train is a battle of wills against your own face uncontrollably exploding in mirth. Key is about to go on to big things and this structureless collection of strange and wonderful thoughts, on a bespoke imprint like the Invisible Dot is the perfect jumping-on point for this comedy master.
