Look Out Suzy Goose

by Petr Horacek

We’ve met Suzy Goose before, so we know she’s silly, but this time her silliness very nearly has disastrous consequences.

Suzy is tired of all the noise the other geese make in the farmyard so she decides to seek the peace and quiet of the wood. What she doesn’t realise is that despite the silence she isn’t alone, and that she is gradually collecting unwelcome followers.

Ironically a sudden noise frightens them away, and Suzy realizes she doesn’t actually like it being so quiet, and returns to the safety of her home.

Quietly comical and beautifully illustrated, this is a delightfully scary but reassuring variation on a ‘list’ book which warns young readers of the dangers of straying from home.

I grew up in Prague in the Czech Republic. Just outside our flat there was a wood where I spent lots of time playing with friends. We would climb on piles of soil or build bunkers from forgotten builder's materials. I always wanted to be an illustrator, but I preferred to look at the pictures inside the books rather than to read them. I would listen to the story or watch a film and then fill up my sketchbook with pictures and images from the story. I started to read books quite late, but I haven't stopped since.
