The Big Dark

by John Prater

This delicately illustrated book celebrates the magic of winter dark, and the promise of returning springtime.

Prater tells the story from the viewpoint of a small Inuit boy, for whom winter offers a seemingly endless succession of dark, cold days with nothing to do indoors. But his parents take him outside to show him that there are still exciting things to see. And with each each new young animal encountered, he imagines a tiny adventure.

Every page is sprinkled with reflective material, showing the magic of the dark, and gradually the colours lighten. Finally in the last spread we see the first sunrise, denoting the arrival of spring.

A charming book to share during winter bedtimes.
