Alfie and the Big Boys

by Shirley Hughes

Alfie thoroughly enjoys Nursery School, playing shop, learning to write his name and making masks. But he'd really like to play with the boys at Big School next door, especially Year One gang leader Ian Barger. But Ian takes no notice of little kids. Then one Saturday, on an outing, Alfie hears a boy sobbing and is surprised to find Ian in tears because he's lost his Mum. Alfie comforts Ian until his mum returns. Shirley Hughes perfectly captures life as a small child – the fun, the anxieties and the amazing realisation that big boys sometimes feel insecure too. Children will relish this warm tale of everyday life with illustrations overflowing with colour and vitality.
