Tamburlaine's Elephants

by Geraldine McCaughrean

Rusti, a young nomad, lives on the fringes of the warrior horde of Tamburlaine the Great, a powerful ruler whose brutality is legendary. The horde and its leader are merciless, sweeping through Asia, crushing and destroying as they pass.

In the course of his first real battle, Rusti captures an elephant and its young rider and although the two are intrinsic enemies and don't even share a common language, the bond between them grows until one day their friendship forces Rusti to decide where his loyalties really lie.

Once again this multi-award-winning author brings history to life by combining meticulous research with a focus on the individual and a very personal story. Set in the war-ravaged arena of fourteenth century India, this fascinating tale will give youngsters a real insight into a way of life which is so very different from our own.
