White Owl Barn Owl

by

Nicola Davies
Illustrator: Michael Foreman

The remit of the Read and Wonder series is to encourage children to 'think, feel and imagine as they learn'. This is the fourth of Davies' books for the series, and she brings a zoologist's knowledge to the text, while Foreman's illustrations combine an evocative interpretation of the story with accuracy of specific owl-related detail.

Davies cocoons the factual information within an inter-generational first-person narrative of a girl and her grandfather building an owl nest-box, and watching the nesting and chick-rearing process. As the girl discovers, so do the readers.

Foreman adds handwritten notes to his pictures, which provide an additional source of information about owls and their lives. A note about nest-boxes and an index complete this imaginative and excellent book.
