Old Bob's Brown Bear

by

Niki Daly
Illustrator: Niki Daly

Emma doesn't understand why Old Bob gets a teddy for his birthday, why would a grandpa want a bear? He doesn’t even seem to like it, and stuffs it onto a bookshelf.

Emma persuades him to lend her the bear. She and the bear happily play in the garden, have picnics and romp on the beach until eventually she outgrows it. The, one day Old Bob visits and, finding the bear abandoned in a toy-box, finally and delightedly discovers the fuzzy-wuzzy old bear he'd always wanted.

Daly's warm, painterly illustrations and light narrative touch avoid sentimentality, creating a thoughtful, reassuring story about the love between grandparent and grandchild; also the love for a toy which attains special meaning in a family's history.
