It's Quacking Time

by

Martin Waddell
Illustrator: Jill Barton

When Mummy Duck lays an egg, Duckling doesn't know what it is. Daddy tells him a baby duck will come out, just like Duckling did, and Auntie and Granda tell him more about his own egg.

When Cousin Small refuses to believe he also came from an egg, they wait, watching and listening impatiently to see who is right.

A happy and reassuring book, which prepares the youngest of readers for a new baby in their own family.

Simple, repetitive illustrations emphasise the loving care and interest with which the whole duck family awaits the new arrival, while repeated phrases within the text invite young readers to join in, especially with the family's quacked greeting to the newcomer.

I was read to a lot as a child by people who knew how to read stories. These stories came alive for me, and the love of story has stayed with me ever since.
I live where I lived as a child, and nearly all my stories come from things that have happened to me here, at the foot of the Mountain of Mourne. I work in an old stone barn beside my home, and dream my stories in the garden and on long walks on the beach in front of my house. I never write anywhere else. This is where I belong.
