Valiant

by Holly Black

17-year-old Val runs away to New York City after discovering her boyfriend and her mother together. She takes up with a group of teenagers who not only live rough in the tunnels of the subway system, but bizarrely run errands for the faeries who inhabit the city.

Val soon discovers that she has to deal with a reality very different from the one she left behind in order to survive.

The author weaves the harsh reality of street life and drug taking with a fantasy world of faeries and mythical creatures to create an intriguing and original story that is also quite disturbing in places. This is definitely a book for mature readers, as it contains the adult themes of drugs and sex.
